“Secrets to Sleeping Well” Senior-Focus Health Lecture

Tuesday, May 4, 10-11am
Calvary Bible Church, 3245 Kalmia Ave, Boulder

In the Winter/Spring issue of Boulder Magazine, local author Kay Turnbaugh wrote about the serious risks of sleep apnea (see When the Breathing Stops).

The chances of enjoying a restful sleep slowly decrease as we age. In fact, about 3 out of 5 adults over age 65 have some kind of sleep complaint. Insomnia is only one of the problems. Snoring and sleep apnea — repeated short episodes of interrupted breathing — also become more common with age. Poor sleep quality can be a cause for concern, since it can lead to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, depression, obesity and diabetes.

Board-certified sleep expert Michael Weissberg, MD, of the Boulder Community Sleep Disorders Center will describe ways to improve sleep during a free, one-hour health lecture. The lecture will be held on Tuesday, May 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Calvary Bible Church, located at 3245 Kalmia Avenue in Boulder.

Reservations are required. Attendees should call 303-441-0580 or email publicinformation@bch.org .

Last Weekend to See Denver Children's Theatre production of CINDERELLA

DENVER CHILDREN’S THEATRE

CINDERELLA
Sunday, May 2, 1pm
$9 general admission or $8 for children, students or seniors
MACC at the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center (JCC), 350 S. Dahlia St.
(303) 316-6360, www.maccjcc.org

Families and school groups will marvel at new-fangled magic during a live theatre production of Cinderella. When the show takes the stage in Shwayder Theatre at Mizel Arts & Culture Center (MACC), youthful audiences will be privy to modern twists on the beloved fairytale in a kingdom where imagination rules.

Recommended for children in grades ECE-6, this contemporary rendition of Cinderella offers not only an entertaining experience but also lessons about diversity, coming of age, class struggles and the victory of right over wrong as our Cinderella struggles to cope with the loss of her mother and learns how to interact with fairly likeable stepsisters in less opulent surroundings. Other characters are a sympathetic prince and his best friend, an aspiring musician but not yet legendary Mozart, a peculiar king, a warm and wacky godmother and a not totally despicable step-mom.

This new world of enchantment is deftly conjured by Director Billie McBride. Having directed previous plays at MACC, Arvada Center, Denver Center for the Performing Arts and Colorado Springs Conservatory, McBride works her magic again on this production, using Charles Way’s script based on Charles Perrault’s story. Mc Bride brings Denver’s most accomplished adult actors, Jamie Ann Romero (Cinderella), Brian Landis Folkins (Prince Sebastian), Crystal Verdon (Stepmother), Karen Slack (Constanze), Mare Trevathan (Aloysia), Michael Kane (Fairy Godmother, Mozart) and Josh Hartwell (Sigmund, King Leopold), to the stage.

Tickets for the final performance of Cinderella at 1 pm on Sunday, May 2 are $9 general admission or $8 for children, students or seniors at MACC at the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center (JCC), 350 S. Dahlia St.

Lecture on ‘Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself’ with Dr. Joe Dispenza

Lecture on ‘Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself’ followed by a Q&A
Thursday, April 15 at 7pm
Unity of Boulder
Tix: $25 (prepaid online), $30 at the door. Students $15.

BIG CONVERSATIONS is proud to bring neuroscientist, chiropractor, author and lecturer, DR JOE DISPENZA, from What the Bleep Do We Know!? to Boulder in this uniquely informal and intimate evening of 'big conversation' about science and spirituality.

Best known as one of the most popular scientists/personalities featured in the film What the Bleep Do We Know!? Dr Dispenza is also the author of the bestselling book Evolve Your Brain – The Science of Changing Your Mind which connects the subjects of thought and consciousness with the brain, the mind and the body, and explores ‘the biology of change’.

Dispenza’s work on the brain and the relationship between the mind-body connection was inspired at age 23, after being run over by a truck while competing in a triathlon. He suffered multiple fractures to his vertebrae and was told he would never walk again. Against doctor’s advice, Dispenza decided against surgery and after three months, along with a careful therapeutic program, he had literally thought his way to healing. Dispenza followed through on the promise that he made to himself – that if he was ever able to walk again, he would dedicate his life to studying the mind-body connection and share that knowledge with others, to inspire them to harness their own innate ability to heal themselves.

Over the last 20 years, Dr Dispenza has lectured in over 18 countries, educating people about the role and function of the human brain. He has taught thousands of people how to re-program their thinking through scientifically proven neuro-physiologic principles. As a result, this information has taught many individuals to reach their specific goals and visions by eliminating self-destructive habits. His approach, taught in a very simple method, creates a bridge between true human potential and the latest scientific theories of neuroplasticity. He explains how thinking in new ways, as well as changing beliefs, can literally rewire one’s brain.

The premise of Dr Joe Dispenza’s work is founded in his total conviction in the latent power of human potential, our ability to transcend our personal limitations and the interconnectedness of the brain, the mind, the body and consciousness.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear Dr Joe Dispenza share the science, tools and techniques that make it possible for us to truly change our mind, our health and our life.

SUSAN POLIS SCHUTZ TO DEBUT HER NEWEST DOCUMENTARY TONIGHT, APRIL 14

DEBUT AIRING OF “THE MISUNDERSTOOD EPIDEMIC: DEPRESSION”

SUSAN POLIS SCHUTZ’S NEWEST DOCUMENTARY

Airs Wednesday, April 14 at 8pm, KRMA-TV- PBS, Channel 24

Depression is one of America’s most prevalent, silent, and least understood mental illnesses. This film reveals the stark truth about depression through the first-hand accounts of victims of depression and their families.

One in four women suffer from depression; one in eight men.

With more than 21 million Americans diagnosed with clinical depression annually, it remains one of the most misunderstood conditions – often not recognized as a medical illness, but as something imagined or self-inflicted.

Told from the perspectives of the victims of depression and their families, “The Misunderstood Epidemic: Depression” reveals the heartbreaking stories of men, women and teens trapped by clinical depression. The film explores through first-hand accounts that depression can happen to anyone regardless of age, race or socioeconomic background. The film also delves into the pros and cons of medication, different types of therapy and support groups.

ABOUT SUSAN POLIS SCHUTZ

TIME Magazine called her “the reigning star” and others know her as a distinguished American poet, author and activist; locally Susan Polis Schutz is a native and staunch supporter of Boulder, Colorado.

Susan’s work has been published in more than 11 million books, 450 million greeting cards and numerous magazines and newspapers. She has the uncanny ability to capture the thoughts and feelings of people around the world, and as her life events have unfolded, infinite amounts of readers have experienced them right along with her.

The documentary is a close look into how depression affects its victims and their families; it helps people understand depression, give them hope and support. Susan brings reality to the documentary though personal experience; she provides guidance through her own turbulent, yet ultimately victorious, battle with depression.

Bach Cantata project this weekend

Bach's Cantata "Gottes Zeit"
First United Methodist Church
1421 Spruce Street in Boulder
Dress rehearsal (open to the public): 11am

Performance: 11:45am

The first "Cantata Project" event is taking place this weekend. The chorus singers are from The Renaissance Project, The Boulder Bach Festival, and other area choruses. The soloists are CU voice students, and the instrumentalists are some of the top baroque players in the area.

This event is an experiment in putting together an informal performance of a Bach Cantata with a minimum of rehearsal. With almost 60 high-caliber participants in the project, including singers and instrumentalists, The Renaissance Project (the presenter of the project) is expecting to offer future workshops on other great Bach cantatas.

Many people do not know that the choruses in Bach's cantatas are as great as the choruses in his large works (in particular the passions and the masses). With "Gottes Zeit" there are three of these great choruses. The first chorus "God's own time" has three parts, an opening exposition, a fugue, and a closing adagio. The second chorus "This is the ancient law: man, thou must perish!" is a fugue for the lower three voices overlaid with the soprano solo begging "Come quickly Lord Jesus." The final chorus combines the chorale "Glory, laud, praise and majesty" with a triumphant closing fugue.

The dress rehearsal will start a bit after 11:00am, followed by the performance iat about 11:45am. Audience members might find it interesting to attend the dress rehearsal plus the performance, allowing the opportunity to hear the work twice and to observe the rehearsal process. A donation of $5 to help fund future Cantata Project events is requested.

"Bach was probably only 22 years old when he composed the opening sonatina, in which two obbligato alto recorders mournfully echo each other over a sonorous background of viola da gambas and continuo. The cantata ranks among his most important works. Inspired directly by its biblical text, it exhibits a great depth and intensity. Alfred Dürr called the cantata "a work of genius such as even great masters seldom achieve ... The Actus Tragicus belongs to the great musical literature of the world". [Wikipedia]

Stephanie Soechtig, director of the acclaimed documentary Tapped, is on a mission to change the world of water. The documentary is about the harmful effects that the bottled-water industry and the bottles themselves have on the environment and our bodies. Stephanie and her crew are crossing the country, stopping in cities from California to New York, to raise awareness of their film and issues concerning bottled water. At each stop they offer a free screening of the film and ask people to bring plastic bottles of water to exchange for reusable steel bottles. CU Theatre Presents: CABARET, THE MUSICAL

University Theatre
April 8-10 & April 14-17 at 7:30pm
Matinee: April 8 at 2:00pm

Book: Joe Masteroff
Composer: John Kander
Lyrics: Fred Ebb

John Kander and Fred Ebb’s legendary musical turns 1931 Berlin into a dark and sexually charged haven of decadence during a time when political unrest racks the country, the economy has been destroyed, and millions of unemployed roam the streets. Cabaret opened on Broadway in 1966 and won eight Tony Awards.

Young American writer Clifford Bradshaw moves to Berlin and falls in love with 19-year-old English performer Sally Bowles at the sleazy Kit Kat Klub. As his writing progresses so does the chaos in the world around them, and he discovers the dark side of human nature through Sally’s callousness, the debauchery of the seedy cabaret, and glimpses of the impending horrors of Nazi Germany.

Cabaret is for Mature Audiences only.
