THOUGH AN OCEAN DIVIDED, THROUGH A COMMON CAUSE UNITED

Educate!'s 2nd Annual Hike for Uganda Will Raise Awareness of Ultimate Aims for Education

On August 28, 2010, Educate!'s 2nd Annual Hike for Uganda will be held from 8:30 a..m. until 1:30 p.m. at Green Mountain in Boulder, Colo. The event celebrates the powerful connection between Educate!'s U.S. supporters and its Ugandan students as participants in Boulder and Kamapla, Uganda will trek to the top of a peak, symbolizing the common goal of empowering the next generation of socially responsible leaders.

"We're joining cultures and communities," said Eric Glustrom, who founded Educate! in 2002. "The Hike is a chance to unite our incredible students and the generous individuals who make that education possible. We will all be standing atop a mountain, cheering for a common cause."

Educate! believes the solutions to Uganda's problems with poverty, disease and environmental degradation will come from within the Ugandan communities themselves. The organization works to unlock the potential within African youth and empower future generation of leaders. The Hike will raise awareness and funds for education programs in Africa; all of the money raised will directly support Educate!'s 830 Ugandan students as they work to transform their communities.

"The Hike is a great opportunity to socialize with other Educate! supporters and hear updates about the Educate! students' work in Uganda," said Maya Ellman, Director of Communications for Educate!. "The funds we raise will make a significant difference in the lives of our students."

The event offers two distance options, four-miles and two-miles, catering to varied fitness levels. Hikers will also enjoy music by local Boulder band, Lost Angel Station, whose unique bluegrass sound is infused with flavors of old time, modern rock, reggae, folk and Celtic influences. Bagels, snacks and other refreshments will be available. Vic's Espresso will provide coffee and hot chocolate to rev up eager participants.

Kids too will enjoy themselves with face-painting and music. The shorter hiking option allows families to participate in the event together.

Registration, breakfast, kids' activities and live music will go from 8:30-9 a.m. The kick-off is at 9:15 a.m., and the hike begins at 9:30 a.m.

Tickets are available for $10 pre-sale and $15 after August 25, 2010 as well as on the day of the event. Kids under 12 are free. Dogs on leashes are also welcome and Educate! will provide plastic bags and treats.

Directions: Drive west on Baseline Rd. in Boulder past Chautauqua and wind up Flagstaff Mountain. At the top you will see Educate! signs directing you to the registration area and Hike start point. A map will also be available on the Educate! Hike for Uganda web page.

The Hike for Uganda is sponsored by: Vic's Espresso, Third Avenue Eye Care, Honest Tea, Sunflower Preschool and Lost Angel Station.

ABOUT EDUCATE!

Educate!, founded in 2002, empowers students across Uganda to drive the social, political and economic development of their communities. We teach a two-year curriculum on how to lead social change, provide long term mentoring, and create a life-long, national network that equips students with the skills and confidence necessary to transform their communities. Carbon-Friendly Fourteeners: Biking and Hiking Colorado's Peaks

Last July, Boulderite Bart Miller left his home in south Boulder on his bike, with his Bob trailer in tow. He then traveled around the state and climbed 53 of the 54 Colorado Fourteeners in the span of about seven weeks --reaching all the trailheads by bike!

On July 23, Bart will present slides, stories, and lessons learned from his adventure at the Boulder REI store, located at 1789 28th St. The event will begin at 7pm.

Bart's presentation will include photos of peaks, friends, plants and animals, and the benefits and drawbacks from low-carbon peak-bagging. He will also cover the "how-to" details including gear, training, trip planning and execution. A representative from the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative may be present to answer any questions about the 14ers and to offer information about volunteering.

WILDFIRE COMMUNITY ARTS MURAL PROJECT BEGINS JULY 9!

EVER WONDER ... "How do they paint those huge building murals?"

FIND OUT working side by side professional artist, Anita Yeh creating Berthoud's newest public art piece. Yeh will design the image for the mural for the east wall of the art center, a 40 x 15 foot area just west of the intersection of 4th street and Massachusetts. Her student art team will then learn how both to enlarge the image to fit the actual wall, and apply the paint to create it.Visit the Wildfire Arts website to access the application and get involved!

Seeking interns: High School age through Adults to create and paint the 40' x 15' mural at 425 Massachusetts Street, Berthoud, July 9, 11, 12-15, 26-29 (9:30 - mid afternoon). Download an application from the Wildfire Arts website

A Sense of Community

Yeh, who moved to Berthoud in 2008, and is married to metal artist David Norrie, has training in art therapy, as well as making her living creating commissioned art. What interests Yeh about the mural project is the ability of a project like this to reinforce the sense of community through the creation of the artwork, the fact that the mural brings a spot of brightness and cheerfulness to the town and most especially, the opportunity to work with people with a creative spirit and drive and to be able to mentor them to see that opportunities exist to be able to develop a career in a creative field and earn income.

Eye Candy Berthoud-style

Her design for the Wildfire mural incorporates some elements of a painting style from rural China, known as farm painting. The bold, graphic style is similar to the primitivist American painter Grandma Moses and uses bright colors, repetitive shapes to create story like scenes, often of holiday celebrations of weddings and other common festivities. Yeh's design for the Wildfire mural has the dragon mascot of the art center morphing into mountains, with sunflowers and greenery to invoke the garden spot nature of Berthoud. The bright colors and active shapes will draw attention to the building, and provide another piece of eye candy for the community.

In addition to the intern muralists, anyone from the community who wants to help is welcome, there will be scaffolding to set up and move as well as other jobs. Wildfire hopes to gain some financial support for the project from local groups and businesses. Any questions about the project can be answered by Anita Yeh at 720-841-2770 or Wildfire e-mail WildfireArtco@hotmail.com.

“For I am bound, as on a wheel of fire….”

"King Lear perplexes and awes—and in some weird way delights as well. Perhaps it’s the line after line of unmatched poetry, or perhaps the sheer universality of its themes. For anyone who has children, or who has cared for a once powerful parent, the play reverberates with meaning."

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival (CSF) opens its summer season tonight with King Lear, hailed by many as the greatest play in the English language. Performances are in the Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre on the University of Colorado at Boulder’s campus.

Director Lynne Collins has chosen to set Lear in the American West, turn of the century, in a world dominated by powerful, masculine men, who had made it big in timber, mining, and landholdings the size of an entire country. In this setting, as the most powerful of them all, Lear is truly a king.

In a first portentous scene, the still powerful but aging Lear (John Hutton) calls together his court to divide his kingdom among his three daughters: Goneril (Karyn Casl), Regan (Karen Slack), and Cordelia (Jamie Ann Romero). Asked to prove their love with words, the two elder daughters make fulsome declarations. But the youngest, Cordelia, is honest and reticent. (“I cannot heave my heart into my mouth.”) She refuses to say anything more than that she loves her father “according to my bond,” i.e., as a daughter should love her father. Infuriated, Lear disinherits Cordelia and she leaves with her suitor, the Duke of Burgundy (Benjamin Bonenfant), who recognizes her worth and values her for herself alone. Lear declares that he will divide his time between the households of Goneril and Regan—and that fateful decision sparks the fearful events which follow.

Only nine performances of Lear will be given: July 1 (Preview), 2 (Opening Night), 3, 20, 21, 29, 30 and August 7 and 8. Early (6:30 pm) and later (8:00 pm) curtain times are available. See calendar at www.coloradoshakes.org for times.
