“Secrets to Sleeping Well” Senior-Focus Health Lecture

In the Winter/Spring issue of Boulder Magazine, local author Kay Turnbaugh wrote about the serious risks of sleep apnea (see When the Breathing Stops).

The chances of enjoying a restful sleep slowly decrease as we age. In fact, about 3 out of 5 adults over age 65 have some kind of sleep complaint. Insomnia is only one of the problems. Snoring and sleep apnea — repeated short episodes of interrupted breathing — also become more common with age. Poor sleep quality can be a cause for concern, since it can lead to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, depression, obesity and diabetes.

Board-certified sleep expert Michael Weissberg, MD, of the Boulder Community Sleep Disorders Center will describe ways to improve sleep during a free, one-hour health lecture. The lecture will be held on Tuesday, May 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Calvary Bible Church, located at 3245 Kalmia Avenue in Boulder.

Boulder Community Hospital (BCH) hosts Senior Focus Lectures to address the unique health issues one faces when growing older. They provide a forum for the interactive exchange of health information between local medical experts and senior community members. Families and school groups will marvel at new-fangled magic during a live theatre production of Cinderella. When the show takes the stage in Shwayder Theatre at Mizel Arts & Culture Center (MACC), youthful audiences will be privy to modern twists on the beloved fairytale in a kingdom where imagination rules.

Recommended for children in grades ECE-6, this contemporary rendition of Cinderella offers not only an entertaining experience but also lessons about diversity, coming of age, class struggles and the victory of right over wrong as our Cinderella struggles to cope with the loss of her mother and learns how to interact with fairly likeable stepsisters in less opulent surroundings. Other characters are a sympathetic prince and his best friend, an aspiring musician but not yet legendary Mozart, a peculiar king, a warm and wacky godmother and a not totally despicable step-mom.

This new world of enchantment is deftly conjured by Director Billie McBride. Having directed previous plays at MACC, Arvada Center, Denver Center for the Performing Arts and Colorado Springs Conservatory, McBride works her magic again on this production, using Charles Way’s script based on Charles Perrault’s story. Mc Bride brings Denver’s most accomplished adult actors, Jamie Ann Romero (Cinderella), Brian Landis Folkins (Prince Sebastian), Crystal Verdon (Stepmother), Karen Slack (Constanze), Mare Trevathan (Aloysia), Michael Kane (Fairy Godmother, Mozart) and Josh Hartwell (Sigmund, King Leopold), to the stage.

Boulder Dandelion Festival, April 23

One of our favorite festivals is coming back to Boulder on April 23.

Citizens for Pesticide Reform, a branch of the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center, has organized the Dandelion Festival to celebrate the healthful and environmental benefits of the much-maligned dandelion.

The Festival features music, experts speaking about the environment (and the use of pesticides in Boulder County) and the first annual Dandelion Cook-Off.

HEAR Brigitte Mars speak about the wonders of the Wild, Edible and Medicinal Plants of Boulder. TASTE a variety of dandelion delights. LEARN about the latest techniques in backyard gardening and how to make your lawn organic. HAVE your face painted and create dandelion crowns. VOTE for your favorite dandelion recipe as Boulder chefs battle in the Dandelion Cook-Off. Join the Boulder community in supporting local vendors who provide safe and healthy products.

The Dandelion Festival is FREE and takes place at the Boulder Bandshell (Broadway and Canyon) from 9am-4pm.
