When it comes to purses, you can go Gucci, you can go Prada, or you can go rubber. Actually, that last brand name is English Retreads, a line of purses, clutches and wallets made from recycled inner tubes collected from Boulder-area truck stops.
Designer Heather English says she got the idea for her company in 2001 while floating down Boulder Creek in an inner tube. “I needed a new handbag, but I was a hard-core vegetarian. I wanted something that was fashionable and invincible—but not made from leather,” she says.
Featured in newspapers and magazines, English Retreads bags start at about $45 and are available at many area stores and online at www.englishretreads.com.
