Screening of BAD BLOOD: A CAUTIONARY TALE

Presented by National Hemophilia Foundation Colorado

What if your life-saving medicine contained deadly viruses – and the drug manufacturers, the government, and your own doctors knew and failed to warn you?

The Colorado Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) is hosting the screening of Bad Blood: A Cautionary Tale followed by a panel discussion from experts in the field. The screening will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on June 29th, 2011 at Buntport Theatre Company. Join us for this incredibly important documentary about the victimization of those with bleeding disorders.

Through the eyes of survivors and family members, BAD BLOOD chronicles how a “miracle” treatment for hemophilia became an agent of death for 10,000 Americans. Faced with evidence that pharmaceutical companies and government regulators knew the product was contaminated with deadly viruses from the 1960s through the early 1990s, the hemophilia community launched a powerful and inspiring fight to right the system that failed them and to make it safer for all.

“The Colorado Chapter is honored to have the opportunity to share this riveting and devastating story with members of the Colorado community. Whether you have been affected by a bleeding disorder directly, indirectly, or are not familiar with bleeding disorders, this is an essential documentary for every person to watch. “While the results of this negligence are devastating, there is something here for everyone to learn from” shared Emily Davis, Executive Director of the Colorado Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation.

Sponsored by the Colorado Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation with in-kind support from Buntport Theatre Company, the screening of Bad Blood: A Cautionary Take will include panelists from the Colorado Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center (HTC) and special guest, Susan Kocik.

The price for single tickets is $10 and $25 for families or groups of three or more. Registration is limited to 80 registrants. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Street parking is available. All proceeds to benefit the Colorado Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation. Individuals interested in attending are asked to register as soon as possible by visiting: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/1624517977 or by calling (720) 626-1263. For more information, contact Emily Davis, Executive Director of Colorado Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation.

Boulder Outdoor Cinema goes “au naturel” with help from Whole Foods Market

One of Boulder's favorite movie series just got better!

Boulder Outdoor Cinema
Saturday, July 17: "The Princess Bride"

Movies and junk food historically go hand-in-hand, but this summer, Whole Foods Market is helping to change that. In a partnership with Boulder Outdoor Cinema (BOC), Whole Foods Market has restocked the concessions pantry to contain only all-natural treats. This year, snacks and drinks sold at the film screenings will be free of artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and trans fats.

“Boulder Outdoor Cinema is very excited about our partnership with Whole Foods this season,” said Tiffany Monroe Director of Concession for Boulder Outdoor Cinema. “With Whole Foods support, we are now able to offer our patrons high quality concessions that are healthier than traditional candy and soda.” Now in its fifteenth season, the BOC has become a Boulder summertime tradition. Live music, trivia, contests, comedians and other forms of entertainment precede the movie and create audience interaction which creates an experience quite different from a traditional movie theatre.

“We wish to help align the event with the health-conscious Boulder community,” said Matt Collins Marketing and Community Relations Specialist for Ideal Market and Whole Foods Market Baseline. “When patrons experience our all-natural products they’ll realize that they can have all the taste and enjoyment without artificial ingredients.”

Film screenings run every Saturday from July 10 through August 14 at 1750 13th St. in downtown Boulder, directly behind the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. Live entertainment begins at 7:30pm with a 9pm show time. This season’s movies were selected by the Boulder community and include such favorites as “The Princess Bride,” “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” and Disney Pixar’s “UP.” Visit the Boulder Outdoor Cinema website for a complete list of films and more information.

The documentary is about the harmful effects that the bottled-water industry and the bottles themselves have on the environment and our bodies. Stephanie and her crew are crossing the country, stopping in cities from California to New York, to raise awareness of their film and issues concerning bottled water. At each stop they offer a free screening of the film and ask people to bring plastic bottles of water to exchange for reusable steel bottles. Share the Passion - Boulder Internation Film Festival

Voted one of the “25 Coolest Film Festivals” by MovieMaker Magazine, BIFF is held annually on Presidents’ Day weekend. From Feb. 11-14, attend screenings of new-but-unknown feature films, shorts and documentaries at multiple venues around Boulder.

Below are some BIFF news briefs. Visit BIFF online to sign up for their newsletter, get the complete schedule of events, and to catch the passion for independent film.

A FEW OF THE GREAT FILMS OF BIFF-2010!
(More information on all films are available at the BIFF Online Program)

I Am Love (Program 7) - In every sense, I Am Love is a stunning achievement. " – Variety. This sumptuous drama is about the irresistible heat of forbidden passion within the constrained upper- class mores of a wealthy, cultivated Italian family.

The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers (Program 32) - Nominated for an Academy Award. It was Nixon's obsession with destroying Daniel Ellsberg that led to the Watergate burglary, Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War. A thrillling documentary.

Mother (Program 5) - "A dazzling murder mystery." Cannes Film Festival. How far would a fiercely maternal single mother go to protect her mentally challenged 27-year-old son who was framed for a heinous murder?

Icons of Jazz
(Program 9) - Capturing scores of great performances (sometimes guerrilla-style) throughout America and Europe, this film shows that jazz in the 21st century has never been more alive, vibrant or popular.

Waking Sleeping Beauty (Program 11) - A juicy, scathing, behind-the-scenes tell-all about the turmoil at Walt Disney Studios released by, well, Walt Disney Studios. Magic, it seems, like sausage, is not always pretty to watch being made.

The Misfortunates (Program 27)- Belgium's entry to the 2010 Academy Awards. "Visually robust and hilarious" –Variety. Originally titled The Shittiness of Things, this high-energy film is a semi-affectionate reminiscence of the author's own bawdy, chaotic adolescence as the youngest generation of a line of proud (and often drunk) Strobbe men.

THE INAUGURAL DiMe CONFERENCE AT BIFF!

DiMe is the short name for Digital Media Convergence Symposium, which is presented during BIFF by the new Governor's Office of Film Television Media and The Boulder Convention and Visitors Bureau. It's a dynamic forum to stimulate, inspire, and solidify the new media and video-game community in Colorado and to establish Colorado's hotspot as a hub for international innovation.

Colorado is already home to a considerable workforce of digital/film artists, technicians and trades on the cutting edge of new media. The DiMe symposium is a way to bring these players together during the Boulder International Film Festival 2010, when thousands of film lovers converge on downtown Boulder from the nearby hills and abroad, to magnetize even more creative energy to Colorado.

A PANEL of visionary leaders in the film, media and gaming industries will discuss their commonalities and the potential for collaboration as well as the evolution and applications of new technology and distribution, and how to engage in this profitable arena. A RECEPTION In the true spirit of the word symposium, DiMe's reception at the St. Julien Hotel and Spa brings the players together for lively discussions over cocktails. It's a chance to interact and trade ideas, business cards, and build community. Hors d'oeuvres and soft drinks. Cash bar.

A FEATURE FILM. Here's a rare treat: to have Disney wunderkind, director Don Hahn present for the screening of his documentary, Waking Sleeping Beauty, which reveals the perfect storm behind the scenes at Disney during the renaissance of animation. Go to biff1.com/dime for more information!

Making Legends, Inspiring Adventure: Fifth Annual Adventure Film Festival Opens Today!

The Fifth Annual Adventure Film Festival, from November 12-14, 2009, premieres the most exciting and inspiring award-winning independent films from around the world. The festival is dedicated to all aspects of adventure—from serious exploration to environmental heroism to gripping tales from the edge of the believable. Presented by Patagonia, this three-day festival features over 20 high caliber films handpicked by the Adventure Film Selection Committee from over 200 entries submitted from around the word. At the best venues in town, including the historic Boulder Theater and the intimate B-Side Lounge, the eclectic lineup features exploration, surfing, climbing, biking, skiing, as well as films that tackle environmentalism, global awareness, and social issues. There will also be an Adventure Filmmaking Workshop designed to inspire the audience to create outdoor films of their own. Discussions with top outdoor filmmakers, photography exhibits, gear giveaways, live music, and fundraising for non-profit organizations enrich the community experience.

This year’s festival will to pay tribute to the late Jonathan “Jonny” Copp, founder of the Adventure Film Festival and visionary who was killed in an avalanche in western China this past spring, during an expedition to make a first ascent of the 6800-meter Mount Edgar. This year’s festival will present a special episode from the new National Geographic series 'First Ascent: Point of No Return,’ which documents the final days of elite climbers Jonny and his partner Micah Dash, and Sender Films’ cameraman Wade Johnson. Jonny’s passing reminds us all of the spirit of Adventure Film—the belief in the power of the story, especially the narrative of adventure and awakening to change and challenge the world we live in. With over 5,000 attendees in 2008, the Adventure Film Festival goes on with the support of filmmakers, sponsors, non-profits, partners, volunteers—all adventurers—who believe in the message: “Make your own legends.” After the Boulder event, Adventure Film will mobilize the 2009 award winners to audiences across the US, and internationally to Chile, France, and South Africa.

BENEFICIARY

Adventure Film is partnered with Leave No Trace, an international non-profit dedicated to conscious recreation and environmental education. Adventure Film and Leave No Trace’s missions and direction have coincided to promote “Activism through Adventure.”

The Jonny Copp Foundation is dedicated to providing opportunities to bring creative expression and adventure to life. They offer grants, outreach programs, exhibits, and a forum that stimulates individual creativity, intellectual promise and the spirit of adventure. The goal is to enable individuals to realize their full potential while creating positive change for themselves, and others around the world.

ONE NIGHT ONLY! Bicycle Film Festival Rolls Into Boulder

This summer, The Bicycle Film Festival, presented by 42BELOW, rolls through Boulder for ONE NIGHT to present a cultural phenomenon like no other. Originating in New York City, the festival is a voice for the most powerful and culturally relevant movement of the past decade: the urban bike movement. The BFF brings together many creative communities, including fashion, music and art as well as various bicycling communities – including fixed gear, BMX, and road cycling - over a shared passion for bike riding.

Coming to Boulder for the first time in its nine-year history, The Bicycle Film Festival presents one night – August 13 – of bike films at Old Main Theater on the CU Campus (Pleasant Street & Old Main, see CU Campus Map). They will be showing two programs at 7pm and 9pm featuring various shorts and one feature film.

At 7pm, the feature film is Where Are You Go directed by Benny Zenga and Brian Vernor. Documenting four months on a bicycle between Cairo, Egypt and Cape Town, South Africa en route with the Tour d' Afrique, the world's longest bicycle race and expedition, BFF Alumni the Zenga Bros. and Brian Vernor share a universal love of the bicycle with Africa's roadside mechanics, sporting racers and curious strangers. Traveling more than 70 miles per day, 50 racers and expedition riders experienced the boundless Nubian desert of Sudan, the great majesty of Victoria Falls, and finally the cold rush of the Atlantic Ocean. The 7,000 mile expedition is a constant adventure full of playfulness and mysterious beauty, and is a testament to the endurance of human curiosity.

Later at 9pm, see various Fun Bike Shorts including Made in Queens, directed by Joe Stevens and Nicholas Randall. In Queens, a group of teens from Trinidad attached speakers to their bikes. The music was never quite loud enough and they had to go bigger and bigger with the sound systems.

Also showing is Anima D’Acciaio (Soul of Steel) – a portrait of the legendary Italian Frame Builder Giovanni Pelizzoli aka "Ciocc." Ciocc shares his wisdom and life story while hand building a revolutionary new frame for urban fixed gear cycling. Ciocc demonstrates that the tradition and craft of frame building’s Golden age can be re-born and push the technical frontier of Cycling's future. Also features Ed "Wonka" La Forte and Antonio Colombo with an original soundtrack by Blonde Redhead.

Directly following the second program, movie-goers are invited to the after party to close the Festival. To purchase tickets and see a full list of events in Boulder for the Bicycle Film Festival, please visit Bicycle Film Festival website.

Tweet Your Support!

As a special part of the Bicycle Film Festival, 42BELOW Vodka is putting out a call to action to take part in supporting the Alliance for Biking & Walking by encouraging tweeters to follow the ride on Twitter (twitter.com/WeLikeBike42). If 20,000 people follow the ride on Twitter, 42BELOW will make a $42K donation to the Alliance.

About the Bicycle Film Festival

In 2001, Brendt Barbur, Founder and Director, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City. Instead of being deterred by this experience, it inspired him to create a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film. Now in its ninth year the festival is held in 39 cities worldwide. 250,000 people are expected to attend this year.

The 9th annual Bicycle Film Festival North American Tour is presented by 42 BELOW Vodka.
