By Rebecca Jessup

“Oh! what a tangled web we weave/When first we practise to deceive!”

So wrote Sir Walter Scott, and that truism has been the wellspring of endless dramas, novels, poems and songs. Playwright Michele Lowe, with the support of DCPA’s New Play Summit, has now added her latest play to that collection. Her small cast of characters is led by Stephanie Janssen as Lena, a New York artist who paints maps of imaginary places; she is about to have her first big show at a gallery owned and run by Rebecca, played by Angela Reed. Lena’s career seems about to take off just when her doctor husband, Ian (Quentin Maré), has lost the all the idealistic passion he once had for medicine, and can focus on nothing but his zeal for flying. His quirky, smart, impractical sister, Jen (Jessica Love), is a former lawyer who now works as a waitress. When we meet her, she is proud, even thrilled, that she saved the life of a customer who was choking at her restaurant.

Evan Cabnet’s casting and direction are excellent. The set and lighting, through sleight-of-hand shifts in emphasis, evoke by turns Lena’s downtown Manhattan studio, the entrance to Rebecca’s gallery, and the balcony of Lena and Ian’s apartment.

The creation of four well-defined main characters by both the playwright and the actors is one of the strongest and most promising aspects of the work. But despite uniformly strong performances, weak links in the plot keep us from being held enthralled. The main story line involves the disruption of Lena and Ian’s marriage, the consequence of an untruth that is revealed some two-thirds of the way through the play. This revelation would explain a great deal if it were more plausible in itself. Given that the characters are all decent people with whom we can identify, the deception revealed becomes too hard to credit, eroding our belief in the characters and their lives. The healing and reconciliation that begin, or are implied, by the end of the play do not quite restore our faith, since no accounts have been settled, no wrongs righted, except that the truth has outed.

Nevertheless, the play is worth seeing for the questions it raises and the way it explores relationships. In addition to the central deception-and-revelation, all the characters are holding something back from one another, until some pressure forces a release, and these releases usher in a sense of hope and possibility at the end.

Actor Alec Baldwin to be Honored at BIFF on Feb 14

Famed Actor, Comedian and Philanthropist to Receive Award of Excellence in Acting

As Blake in Glengarry Glen Ross, actor Alec Baldwin said: "I'd wish you good luck, but you wouldn't know what to do with it if you got it." It's more than luck that brings that famous actor to the Rocky Mountain state.

The Boulder International Film Festival (BIFF) announced that the Emmy award-winning television, stage and film actor, will be honored with an Award of Excellence in Acting at Closing Night of the 2010 festival on Sunday, Feb. 14, at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colo.

"We are thrilled to have Baldwin attending the Boulder International Film Festival," said Kathy Beeck, festival co-founder and director. "He's a magnificent actor who has influenced many young actors and comedians, and we're honored he will join us at this year's festival."

The evening's tribute to Baldwin will include a film retrospective of his work followed by a question and answer session hosted by BIFF Executive Producer Ron Bostwick. Tony Bennett's pianist, Ralph Sharon, will provide the entertainment for the evening before Baldwin's tribute.

Three weeks following BIFF, Baldwin will co-host the 2010 Academy Awards ceremony with his It's Complicated co-star Steve Martin. Baldwin stars with Tina Fey on NBC's "30 Rock", winner of the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for the past three years. He's received three SAG Awards, two Golden Globes, the Television Critics Award, and two Emmies for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. He appears in the film It's Complicated opposite Meryl Streep, which is still running in theatres. Baldwin was nominated for a Tony award for his role in A Streetcar Named Desire. He's appeared in over forty films, including Beetlejuice, The Hunt for Red October, The Aviator and The Departed. Baldwin's performance in The Cooler earned him a National Board of Review Award and an Oscar nomination.

He serves on the boards of People For The American Way, the Hamptons International Film Festival, and The Actors Studio. He supports the Radiation and Public Health Project, the Roundabout Theatre and the Water Keeper Alliance.

Making Legends, Inspiring Adventure: Fifth Annual Adventure Film Festival Opens Today!

The Fifth Annual Adventure Film Festival, from November 12-14, 2009, premieres the most exciting and inspiring award-winning independent films from around the world. The festival is dedicated to all aspects of adventure—from serious exploration to environmental heroism to gripping tales from the edge of the believable. Presented by Patagonia, this three-day festival features over 20 high caliber films handpicked by the Adventure Film Selection Committee from over 200 entries submitted from around the word. At the best venues in town, including the historic Boulder Theater and the intimate B-Side Lounge, the eclectic lineup features exploration, surfing, climbing, biking, skiing, as well as films that tackle environmentalism, global awareness, and social issues. There will also be an Adventure Filmmaking Workshop designed to inspire the audience to create outdoor films of their own. Discussions with top outdoor filmmakers, photography exhibits, gear giveaways, live music, and fundraising for non-profit organizations enrich the community experience.

This year’s festival will to pay tribute to the late Jonathan “Jonny” Copp, founder of the Adventure Film Festival and visionary who was killed in an avalanche in western China this past spring, during an expedition to make a first ascent of the 6800-meter Mount Edgar. This year’s festival will present a special episode from the new National Geographic series 'First Ascent: Point of No Return,’ which documents the final days of elite climbers Jonny and his partner Micah Dash, and Sender Films’ cameraman Wade Johnson. Jonny’s passing reminds us all of the spirit of Adventure Film—the belief in the power of the story, especially the narrative of adventure and awakening to change and challenge the world we live in. With over 5,000 attendees in 2008, the Adventure Film Festival goes on with the support of filmmakers, sponsors, non-profits, partners, volunteers—all adventurers—who believe in the message: “Make your own legends.” After the Boulder event, Adventure Film will mobilize the 2009 award winners to audiences across the US, and internationally to Chile, France, and South Africa.

BENEFICIARY

Adventure Film is partnered with Leave No Trace, an international non-profit dedicated to conscious recreation and environmental education. Adventure Film and Leave No Trace’s missions and direction have coincided to promote “Activism through Adventure.”
